Power Lines and Home Value

High voltage power lines I had someone ask me recently if being located in close proximity to high voltage power lines could negatively affect home value. The short answer is: yes.

As far as I’ve been able to determine, there is no definitive scientific proof that power lines have any detrimental effects on health. But that being said, perception is everything and many people see these structures and develop concerns. It is safe to say that there is a stigma associated with high voltage power lines too close to a house – and some buyers simply won’t be able to look past it.

Take away any real or perceived health issues and there is the pretty much indisputable fact that it’s just not a pretty backdrop to a house. Curb appeal plays a significant role in home value and just as a beautiful vista has the potential to increase a home’s value, the opposite often happens when the vista is unsightly. Proximity to anything negative – power lines, a dump, an unsightly building – any of these things are likely to impact home value.

Bottom line: yes; it’s a consideration if you’re buying a home near high voltage power lines, because when you re-sell, your pool of potential buyers and home value may both be diminished.
