Home Scents

fragrant spice sticksA sometimes-overlooked aspect of preparing your house for sale is ensuring that it smells great. Aromas are important, so here are a few tips to consider if you’re preparing your Guelph home for sale:

  1. Deep cleaning. Before listing your home for sale, clean it from top to bottom and I mean really clean it. Go far beyond the basics of cleaning and tackle everything: baseboards, light fixtures… everything needs to be absolutely spotless. Pay special attention to kitchens and bathrooms. Nothing turns people off faster than coming to view a home that isn’t clean. Yuck. While your house is on the market it needs to stay in that spotless condition. I’m a big believer in hiring professional cleaners for both the deep cleaning and weekly touch-ups while your home is listed. Yes, it’s an expense but a good cleaning professional will do a better job than you – and consider it a good investment that will pay off dividends both with a great looking and smelling house. And don’t you have better things to do?
  2. Pet odour. If you have pets – I do and love mine dearly! – it’s critical to take extra steps to minimize any pet odours in your home while it’s on the market. Clean litter boxes at least once a day, wash any dog beds or blankets often and use pet-friendly air freshener products liberally. If you have carpets with the trademark scent of your pet’s “accidents,” either steam clean or replace them. Bear in mind that some people don’t care for pets and if they smell yours when they view your home it might be a turn-off.
  3. Add pleasant aromas. It may sound gimmicky, but there is a reason why sometimes bread is baking or cookies are on the stove when you visit an open house. Some scents are almost universally appealing and injecting those aromas into your Guelph home might be worth consideration while it’s on the market.
